Comprehensive guide: choosing the right window drive

Automated window opening offers enormous benefits in both private homes and commercial properties. Alongside the daily comfort of room ventilation, safety is the top priority. To find the ideal system for your specific requirements, you should know the technical differences between the various drive types.

Chain drives – the elegant solution for facade windows

Chain drives are the most commonly used electric window openers. When closed, the chain retracts fully into the housing, so the drive is barely noticeable. They are ideal for top-hung, tilt, and turn windows made of aluminum, wood, or PVC. Thanks to their compact design, they can be elegantly matched to the window profile or even integrated invisibly within it.

Linear actuators – powerful support for heavy loads

When it comes to large roof windows, heavy skylights, or roof access hatches, chain drives reach their limits. This is where linear actuators (also known as spindle drives) come in. Thanks to their rigid piston rod, they transmit enormous thrust and pulling forces. They are especially resistant to outdoor weather conditions such as heavy snow loads on the roof or strong wind pressure on the facade.

Frequently asked questions about our products (FAQ)

What voltage is optimal for window drives?
Our range includes drives with 24V and 230V voltage. The choice depends on the intended use. For pure comfort ventilation in living areas or offices, the standard 230-volt mains supply is usually used. However, for a legally required smoke and heat exhaust system (RWA), a 24V DC supply is mandatory, since these systems must be backed up by emergency battery power in the event of an emergency.

Can I retrofit an electric window opener myself?
Yes, retrofitting is possible on almost all common window types. Each of our drives comes with detailed installation instructions. It's important to align the drive and the matching brackets precisely, so that no leverage forces damage the window. For the electrical connection, especially with 230V systems, we always recommend consulting a qualified electrician.

How does the control system respond to wind and rain?
For maximum safety, every electric window drive can be extended with smart sensors. An external wind and rain sensor monitors the weather. As soon as rain starts or wind speed exceeds a critical value, the control unit sends a signal to the drive, and any open windows close automatically. This reliably protects your rooms from water damage.

What maintenance intervals must be observed?
For drives used purely for comfort ventilation, an annual visual inspection and cleaning of the mechanical parts is sufficient. However, if the drives are part of an RWA system, the law requires strict maintenance at least once a year by certified specialist personnel in accordance with DIN 18232, to guarantee their function in the event of a fire.
