It depends mainly on how the sash is hinged and where it opens.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typical mounting positions<\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Tilt sash<\/strong> (hinged at the bottom, opens inwards at the top): the actuator usually sits at the top of the <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/frame-and-sash\/\">outer frame<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Top-hung sash<\/strong> (hinged at the top, opens outwards at the bottom): the actuator usually sits at the bottom.<\/li><li><strong>Roof windows and rooflights:<\/strong> the actuator lifts the sash against gravity, often at the side or on the lower edge.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the mounting position is so important<\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Force:<\/strong> with roof windows and rooflights, much more weight acts on the actuator than with a tilt window in the fa\u00e7ade \u2013 see <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/thrust\/\">Thrust<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Stroke:<\/strong> the possible opening travel depends on the position \u2013 see <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/stroke-length\/\">Stroke length<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Bracket:<\/strong> each position needs a suitable <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/bracket\/\">Bracket<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Weather:<\/strong> outdoors or on the roof a higher <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/ip-rating\/\">Degree of protection<\/a> is required.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solutions by window type: <a href=\"\/en\/tilt-window-drive\/\">Tilt windows<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/roof-window-drive\/\">Roof window<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/skylight-drive\/\">Dome rooflight<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical example: same drive, two mounting positions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a tilt-and-turn window, the chain drive is usually mounted on the sash frame at the top and tilts the sash inwards. The weight of the sash helps to open the window. In a tilt-and-turn window in the roof, the drive pushes the sash outwards, lifting part of its weight with it. Therefore, it needs more power. <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/thrust\/\">Thrust<\/a> and a matching one in the roof area <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/ip-rating\/\">Degree of protection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checklist before ordering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Opening direction: inwards or outwards<\/li>\n\n<li>Position of the wing: vertical in the facade, slanting in the roof or horizontal as a light dome<\/li>\n\n<li>Side of the straps \u2013 the drive engages on the opposite side<\/li>\n\n<li>Space on the frame and on the wing for drive and <a href=\"\/en\/dictionary\/bracket\/\">Bracket<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li>Cableway for control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find these details directly in the <a href=\"\/en\/measurement-sheet\/\">measurement sheet<\/a> Register. The counter bracket then attaches to the other component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changes with outdoor installation?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drive is exposed to rain, dust and temperature changes.
