A conservatory heats up quickly on sunny days. For those who don’t want to constantly open and close windows, ventilation is automatic: electric drives open the roof and side windows, a control unit operates them together, and a rain sensor closes everything as soon as it gets wet. This guide shows which components you need, how they work together, and what you should expect in terms of costs.
In brief: For automatic ventilation in a conservatory you need window actuators, a control unit and a rain or wind-rain sensor. For most roof and bottom-hung windows a VS-KA chain actuator is sufficient, for heavy sashes a VS-LA linear actuator. The VS-C24-7A control unit moves up to 10 actuators together, and the sensor closes all windows when it rains.
What an automatic ventilation system in a conservatory has to do
- Draw warm air upwards: Openings in the roof or in the upper row of side windows let the heat out.
- Getting some fresh air down there: Lower tilt windows ensure that the air flows really well.
- When it rains and storms: A sensor closes the windows even when no one is home.
- Convenient operation: By button on the control panel or via a radio remote control.

| Component | Net price | Task |
|---|---|---|
| VS-KA chain drive (24 V) | from 65 € | Sliding and roof windows, space-saving on the frame |
| Linear actuator VS-LA (24 V) | from 110 € | heavy roof wings and light domes |
| VS-C24-7A controller | 60 € | Supplies up to 10 drives (depending on power consumption) with 24 V and drives them together |
| Rain sensor VS-RS | 33 € | closes when it rains |
| Wind-rain light sensor VS-WRLS | 55 € | closes in rain and strong wind |
| radio remote control VS-C24-F-1 | 14 € | Operation without additional wire to the button |
Which drive for which window?
For most roof and tilt-and-turn windows in the conservatory, one is sufficient VS-KA chain drive. It sits flat on the frame and slides the wing onto it with a chain. For very heavy or large roof wings, a Linear actuator VS-LA With more thrust, the better choice. The guide calculates the power your window needs Calculate thrust first. The appropriate lift is determined by the Stroke calculator.
Why 24 V is useful in the conservatory in winter
Once more than one window needs to operate together or a sensor needs to be closed, a 24-V system is the simpler solution. VS-C24-7A controller Converts 230 V to 24 V DC. All connected drives open and close together, controlled via the button on the device or the remote control. Wind or rain sensors can be connected directly. More information about the comparison can be found in the guide. Window actuator 24 V or 230 V.
Example: Winter garden with four roof windows
| Position | Qty | Net total |
|---|---|---|
| Chain drive VS-KA 24 V (250 N, 100 mm stroke) | 4 | 260 € |
| VS-C24-7A controller | 1 | 60 € |
| Wind-rain light sensor VS-WRLS | 1 | 55 € |
| radio remote control VS-C24-F-1 | 1 | 14 € |
| Material overall | 389 € |
In addition, there are wiring and installation by an electrician. Whether 250 N is enough depends on the weight of the wings. The cost of installation is shown in the guide. How much does an electric window drive cost?.
Position the sensor correctly
The rain sensor should be placed in a location where it can be freely positioned, not under a roof overhang. A wind sensor should be placed as freely as possible and not in the wind shadow of the house. The guide explains how rain sensors work and what you should pay attention to when installing them. Frequently asked questions
How many windows can a controller control?
The VS-C24-7A control unit provides 7 A. Depending on the current consumption of the drives, this can be up to 10 drives that operate together.
Do the windows close even in the event of a power outage?
No. Without power, the drives remain in their positions. The rain or wind sensor ensures safe closure in the absence of power as long as power is available.
Is the system also suitable for smoke extraction (RWA)?
No. The VS-C24-7A control unit is intended for daily comfort ventilation. For smoke and heat extraction, an approved RWA control unit is required. The guide explains the difference. SHEV and daily ventilation.
Can I install the drives myself?
The mechanical installation on the window is doable with some skill. The electrical connection to 230 V must be handled by an electrician.
