Smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV) drives for windows and skylights

Smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV) drives automatically open windows, skylights, and rooflights in the event of a fire, allowing smoke and heat to escape. These same drives typically also handle daily ventilation. Vent Systems supplies 24V window drives for SHEV and ventilation applications from its Hamburg warehouse – for fabricators, metalworkers, facade builders, and specialist planners.

Which drive type is suitable for which smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV) wing?

  • Chain drives – compact, for casement, tilt and turn windows in facades and roofs. The VS-KA covers 250 N to 1,500 N and chain lengths from 100 to 1,000 mm, the VS-DKA 800 800 N distributed across two chains for wide wings VS-KA 2500 (IP66) achieves 2,500 N for very heavy wings.
  • Linear actuators – for roof windows and skylights with a high weight. The VS LA is available with 600 N to 5,000 N and 100 to 800 mm stroke.
  • Spindle drives - the VS-SA 2500 with 2,500 N and up to 1,000 mm stroke for heavy skylights and flaps.
  • Rack-and-pinion drives - the VS-ZA 800 (800 N, IP65) for long strokes and outdoor use.

What matters in the interpretation

  • Force: The required thrust and tensile forces are determined by the wing weight, installation position, and wind or snow load. Plan for a safety margin.
  • Stroke: The stroke is determined by the wing height and the required opening angle or opening area. Our Chain length calculator helps with the initial assessment.
  • Voltage: Smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV) systems typically operate on 24 V DC, supplied via a SHEV control unit with emergency power supply.
  • Consoles: Suitable brackets for sashes and frames can be found in the Accessories.

SHEV and daily ventilation

For basic comfort ventilation, ventilation controls such as the VS-C24-7A with wind and rain sensors. In the case of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV), however, an approved SHEV control panel takes over the operation. What constitutes a SHEV system is explained below. What is a smoke and heat exhaust ventilation system (SHEVS)?, the difference to the NRWG the contribution RWA vs. NRWG. Our article explains the differences in planning. SHEV and daily ventilation.

Note regarding smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (SHEV): All Vent Systems drives are CE-certified according to applicable EU directives. For use in smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems, the drive, window, and an approved smoke and heat exhaust ventilation control unit must be coordinated and verified on a project-specific basis. We would be happy to advise you on this.
