Rack-and-pinion actuator for windows: function, use and selection

Dietmar Heiken

A rack-and-pinion actuator is the robust solution when large or heavy window sashes need to be opened reliably and the actuator may be mounted visibly. It works with a toothed rack, achieves high forces and, thanks to its closed design, is also suitable for outdoor use. Here you will learn how a rack-and-pinion actuator works, where its strengths lie and how to find the right model.

In brief: A rack-and-pinion actuator pushes the sash open via a toothed rack and achieves high forces. Thanks to its enclosed design, it is also suitable for outdoor installation. Typical uses are large bottom-hung and top-hung sashes, continuous rooflights and rooflight domes, where the actuator may be mounted visibly.

How a rack-and-pinion actuator works

An electric motor drives a pinion via a gearbox. The pinion engages a straight toothed rack and pushes it out of the housing or pulls it back. The rack is connected to the sash and opens or closes it. At the end of the stroke, the actuator switches off automatically, see End-position cut-off.

Where are rack-and-pinion actuators used?

  • Large bottom-hung, top-hung and side-hung sashes in facades and continuous rooflights
  • Pivot sashes and wide top-hung windows
  • Rooflights on hall and flat roofs
  • External mounting, where dust and rain hit the actuator
  • SHEV and ventilation systems, if actuator, window and control panel are matched for the specific project

Choosing the right rack-and-pinion actuator

  1. Force: It depends on the sash weight, the installation position and the distance to the pivot point. Plan a reserve for wind and snow, see Calculate thrust.
  2. Stroke: It determines the opening width. Choose it to suit the sash geometry, see Stroke length.
  3. Schutzart: A high degree of protection is important for outdoor installation, see Schutzart IP.
  4. Voltage and control: 24 V actuators are common for ventilation with sensors and for SHEV, see Window control.
  5. Large sashes: Two actuators in synchronous operation prevent the sash from twisting, see tandem operation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mount a rack-and-pinion actuator outdoors?

Yes, if the protection class is right. The VS-ZA 800 has IP65 and is therefore dust-tight and protected against water jets.

Is a rack-and-pinion actuator louder than a chain actuator?

That depends on the model. For rooms where quiet matters, see the guide How loud is an electric window actuator?

When do I need two actuators?

For wide or heavy sashes. Two synchronised actuators distribute the force evenly and protect the sash and hardware.
