A Rack-and-pinion actuator is an electric window actuator in which a motor extends and retracts a toothed rack via a pinion. The rigid rack transfers force very evenly and is suitable for large strokes, heavy sashes and rooflights.
How does a rack-and-pinion actuator work?
Inside the housing, a geared motor turns a pinion that engages the teeth of the rack. The rack pushes the sash open and pulls it closed again. Because the rack is rigid, the force stays the same over the entire stroke.
When is a rack-and-pinion actuator the right choice?
- large or heavy sashes, also in tandem operation with several actuators
- rooflights and roof windows
- large opening widths, e.g. for smoke extraction (SHEV)
- outdoor use where a high protection class is required
Difference from a chain actuator
A Chain actuator is flatter and cheaper, the chain disappears into the housing. A rack-and-pinion actuator is longer, but more robust and suitable for larger strokes and loads. More in the comparison of chain, linear and rack-and-pinion actuators.
