Spindle drive (linear actuator)

A spindle drive, often also called Linear actuator or spindle lift drive, is an electric actuator in which a motor turns a threaded spindle. A spindle nut with push tube then extends and retracts in a straight line. On windows it mainly opens rooflights, roof windows and heavy flaps.

How does a spindle actuator work?

The motor turns the spindle via a gearbox. The nut cannot rotate with it and therefore travels along the spindle. The push tube transfers the movement to the sash. The thread is self-locking, so the sash stays in position without power.

What is a spindle drive suitable for?

  • rooflights and roof windows
  • heavy flaps and sashes with high loads
  • smoke extraction (SHEV) and everyday ventilation
  • applications where the actuator may be mounted visibly

How much force does a spindle drive have?

Spindle drives achieve high forces, depending on the model 600 to 5000 N. This makes them stronger than most chain actuators. The force required depends on the weight and inclination of the sash, see thrust force.
