With a Parallel opening window (PAF), the whole sash is pushed outwards parallel to the façade. A narrow ventilation gap is created all round. This design is often seen on modern glass façades.
Actuators for parallel opening windows
- usually several actuators per sash, mostly at the corners
- all actuators must run exactly in sync – this requires a synchronous control
- the weight of the sash is carried entirely by actuators and hardware
Advantages and limits
Parallel opening windows ventilate evenly and look elegant from outside. The technology is more complex than for a tilt or top-hung window and should be planned by the façade builder.
Frequently asked questions
Can parallel opening windows be retrofitted?
Only if the hardware and window construction are designed for it. A normal tilt window cannot simply be converted.
How many actuators does a PAF need?
Depending on size and weight, usually four. The exact design is done by the façade or window manufacturer.
