In brief: A defective Somfy tubular motor can be replaced by any tubular motor that fits the same shaft and has at least the same torque. The brand does not have to be the same. For the 60 mm octagonal shaft, for example, the A-OK AM45 fits from €65 net, for the 40 mm shaft the A-OK AM35.
Somfy is a registered trademark of Somfy SAS. Vent Systems is not affiliated with Somfy. We only mention the brand so that you can find the right replacement.
The data you need from the old motor
The details are on the rating plate on the motor head or on the cable:
- Torque in Nm, for example 10, 20 or 30 Nm
- Speed in rpm (usually 12 to 17)
- Shaft diameter, usually 40 mm or 60 mm octagonal shaft
- Operation: wall switch, radio or smart home
If the rating plate cannot be read, calculate the torque with our Roller shutter motor calculator from the width, height and material of the shutter.
Suitable replacement motors
| Old motor | Replacement | Net price |
|---|---|---|
| 40 mm shaft, 6 or 10 Nm | A-OK AM35 tubular motor | from €69 |
| 60 mm shaft, wall switch, 15–50 Nm | A-OK AM45 mechanical | from 65 € |
| 60 mm shaft, radio, 6–30 Nm | A-OK AM45 radio with obstacle detection | from €100 |
| No power cable | A-OK AM45 battery-solar | from €235 |
Choose the same torque as the old motor or one step higher. You will find a comparison of all models under roller shutter motor comparison.
What to watch out for when changing brands
- Radio: Hand transmitters and radio receivers from different manufacturers generally do not work together. Plan for a new hand transmitter.
- Bracket: The motor bracket on the shutter box may be different. Check how the old motor is fixed before removing it.
- Adapters: Drive adapter and crown must fit the shaft.
- End positions: On the new motor you set the end positions again, see Limit switch-off.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a Somfy motor with another brand?
Yes. What matters is shaft diameter, torque and operation, not the brand. A radio hand transmitter of the old brand usually does not work with the new motor.
What does a replacement tubular motor cost?
At Vent Systems a tubular motor for the 60 mm shaft costs from €65 net with wall switch and from €100 net with radio. Installation by a qualified electrician may be added.
May I replace the motor myself?
Skilled DIYers can do the mechanical removal. The connection to 230 V belongs in the hands of a qualified electrician. The steps are shown in our guide Replacing a roller shutter motor.
