Actuator (general term) is a general term for a motor that moves something into a certain position. For windows it means the electric window actuator – chain, spindle or rack-and-pinion actuators that open and close a sash.
Types at a glance
- Chain actuator: compact, for tilt and top-hung windows
- Spindle or linear actuator: powerful, for rooflight domes and roof windows
- Rack-and-pinion actuator: for large, heavy sashes with a long stroke
Other meanings
In heating technology, the German term also refers to small valve actuators on heating manifolds. These have nothing to do with window actuators.
Frequently asked questions
Is an actuator the same as a window opener?
For windows, yes. Window opener, window actuator, actuator and window motor usually mean the same thing.
Which actuator suits my window?
That depends on window type, weight and the desired opening travel. The decision table helps with the choice.
