Opening windows in old buildings electrically: wooden windows, box-type windows, listed buildings

Dietmar Heiken

Chain actuator VS-KA / VS-KA-i with bracket, side view

In brief: Windows in old buildings can also be opened electrically. What matters is a stable frame, smooth-running fittings and a clean cable route. For most windows in old buildings, a flat chain actuator from €65 net is sufficient. For listed buildings, clarify the installation with the monument authority beforehand.

What is different in old buildings?

  • Wooden frames: The actuator is screwed on with brackets. The wood must be firm and dry; repair rotten areas beforehand.
  • Box-type windows: Usually only the inner sash is motorised. The actuator needs space between the inner and outer sash or on the inner frame.
  • Old fittings: First free up stiff hinges and stays. An actuator does not replace defective mechanics.
  • Cable route: There is often no cable at the window. In old buildings, a surface-mounted cable duct is usually the simplest solution.

24 V or 230 V in an old building?

If there is a socket or cable nearby, a 230 V actuator with a button is the simplest solution. Several windows, a rain sensor or radio control speak for 24 V with the controller VS-C24-7A. With the radio remote control VS-C24-F-1 , there is no need for a cable to the button. The electrical connection is carried out by a qualified electrician.

Listed buildings

For a listed building, visible changes to the window often need a permit. A small actuator on the inside of the frame is usually not a problem, but should be agreed with the local monument protection authority beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an old wooden window electrically?

Yes, if the frame and fittings are in good condition. The chain actuator is screwed to the frame and the sash with brackets.

Do I need new cables?

For the power supply, yes, if there is no cable at the window. You can save the cable to the button by using a radio remote control.

What does retrofitting in an old building cost?

Material starts at about €100 net per window including a button. Installation comes on top; in old buildings it is often a little more because of the cable route. Examples can be found under Window actuator costs.
