If a rooflight actuator fails, the rooflight stays closed – or worse: open. With SHEV rooflights, smoke extraction is also no longer guaranteed. In most cases the old actuator can be replaced with a current model without replacing the rooflight. This guide shows how to find the right replacement.

Step 1: Identify the actuator type
- Spindle actuator: round or square cylinder with an extending spindle – typical for heavy SHEV rooflights.
- Linear actuator: slim profile with push rod, often on roof windows and medium-sized rooflights.
- Chain drive: flat housing from which a chain extends – on smaller rooflights and flaps.
- Rack-and-pinion actuator: visible rack, for long strokes and high forces.
Step 2: Read the data from the type plate
For selection you need the voltage (24 V or 230 V), force in N, stroke in mm and – for SHEV – the running speed. If the type plate is no longer legible, the rooflight size, its weight and the measured opening travel help.
Besides their own weight, rooflights are subject to snow and wind loads. If in doubt, choose the next higher force rating.

What to consider when replacing
- Consoles: The fixing points of the old actuator rarely match 1:1. Plan for new brackets or an adapter plate.
- Control: The current consumption of the new actuator must match the existing control unit or SHEV control panel.
- Opening time: SHEV rooflights must usually open fully within 60 seconds.
- Occupational safety: only work on the roof with fall protection.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to replace the rooflight together with the actuator?
No. In most cases only the actuator is replaced; the rooflight and upstand remain.
Can I replace a 230 V actuator with a 24 V actuator?
Yes, but a 24 V control unit is then also required. 24 V is standard for SHEV systems anyway.
