Retrofitting and replacing roller shutter motors

A roller shutter motor is a tubular motor that slides into the roller shutter's winding shaft and rolls the curtain up and down electrically. It replaces a belt winder or a defective old motor – without replacing the shutter box. Vent Systems supplies A-OK roller shutter motors for retrofit and new builds, with adapters for common shafts.

In brief: Three details decide the choice: the shaft type (e.g. 40 or 60 mm octagonal), the required torque in Nm and the control (switch or radio). With this data we send you a quote with the right motor and accessories.

The motors run on 230 V (solar versions 12 V DC), radio motors on 433 or 868 MHz. Electronic models detect obstacles, protect against frost and recalibrate their end positions every 100 cycles. Adapters and drive wheels are available for tubes from 40 to 90 mm, including 40 and 60 mm octagonal shafts. All data: A-OK catalogue 2026 exterior (PDF).

Calculating torque

The motor must lift the weight of the shutter curtain over the winding radius. As an approximation: Torque (Nm) = curtain weight (kg) × 9.81 × winding radius (m) × 1.5. The factor 1.5 is a reserve for friction in the guide rails and for the wound-up curtain, which increases the radius.

Example: Curtain 12 kg, 60 mm octagonal shaft, winding radius about 0.05 m: 12 × 9.81 × 0.05 × 1.5 ≈ 8.8 Nm. Choose the next higher rating, e.g. 10 Nm. The most accurate curtain weight comes from weighing or from the shutter manufacturer's data. These are guide values; the motor data sheets are decisive.

Faster: With the Roller shutter motor calculator enter width, height and material and immediately get the torque and the right motor.

A new roller shutter motor in 5 steps

  1. Open the shutter box, check the shaft and existing bearing.
  2. Measure shaft type and length, note the curtain width and height.
  3. Estimate the torque as above or send us the dimensions.
  4. Choose the control: switch, radio transmitter or timer.
  5. Insert the motor with adapter and drive wheel, set the end positions, have it connected by an electrician.

Safety and connection

Tubular motors for roller shutters usually run on 230 V, so the electrical connection must be made by a qualified electrician. Set the end positions so that the curtain is neither over-wound nor pressed too hard onto the sill. Follow the motor's installation and operating instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a belt winder with a motor?

Yes, if power is available at the shutter box or can be routed there. The tubular motor goes into the existing shaft and the belt winder is removed. Without a power supply, a solar solution is possible.

Will the motor fit my existing shaft?

Usually yes. Adapters and drive wheels are available for common octagonal shafts. Tell us the shaft type and diameter and we will check the fit.

Can I replace a defective branded motor?

Yes, as an alternative to motors from established manufacturers such as Somfy, Becker, Elero or Selve. Note: radio systems from different manufacturers are not compatible with each other, so when replacing a radio motor the transmitter is replaced too.

How much does a roller shutter motor cost?

With us, a roller shutter motor costs from €65 net (€77 incl. VAT) for a mechanical 45 mm tubular motor. Radio motors with obstacle detection cost €100 to €126 net, battery-solar motors without a power cable €235 to €265 net. Torque, limit technology and control are decisive.
